The California Department of Public Health’s Skin Cancer Prevention Program has placed three 60-second skin cancer prevention public service announcements (PSAs, made for TV) on their  program’s website.  One of the PSAs is located at the end of the “Schools” section where they have been generous enough to place a link to our Eyes Cream Shades quality sunwear for kids.

Check out below referenced link, and scroll down to the end of the “Schools” section: http://www.dhs.ca.gov/ps/cdic/cpns/skin/skin_resources.htm#3.

Are parents getting tired of buying “toys” for their kids’ precious eyes?

Eyes Cream Shades is now on amazon.com. Featured flavor:  ” strawberry grape swirl”- an adorable purple to pink gradient frame with polycarbonate 100% UVA &UVB lense). Hopefully parents are getting tired of buying “toys” or “novelty items” for their kids… since most of these products do more harm than good. Parents must remember when purchasing for their little loved ones eyes’ to make sure lenses provide at least 99% UVA and  UVB protection, as well as being polycarbonate. Eye Care Professionals nationwide recommended polycarbonate as being the “lense of choice”  for kids and Eyes Cream Shades is a leading brand within the optical arena.

Facts and Stats about Consumer Sunwear Trends

Kids Suncare tips No Comments »

I just finished reading a survey that was conducted this past April as a customer study “appended to a large scale continuous consumer- based VisionWatch study.”  The sampling was made up of 2260 respondents in the U.S. , all over 18 years of age,  who said they have bought sunglasses and use them “regularly.”  When asked how important it was that their sunglasses have UV protection, only 54.7% responded as “very important.”

Worth noting, is that nearly all of the respondents, 92.5%, were aware of the damaging potential of ultraviolet rays. In addition, while more than half of the respondents( 64.6%)  had heard of Age- related Macular Degeneration(AMD), only 28% answered that their eye doctor explained the cause of the disease.

When it comes to the importance of kids wearing “quality” sunwear…maybe we still have a long way in educating adults. I look forward to future surveys showing more favorable results.

Angelina Jolie and Kids in Central Park

I like to think I stay abreast of all the news regarding sunglasses and UV… but I am wondering how this is news? The below referenced photo is all over the news and internet! Angelina does so much good for the world, and here she is in Central Park with her kids, each of them wearing “toys” on their eyes. This is a message that parents will now be interpreting that it is o.k. to put cutesy “toys” and “novelty items” on their precious little eyes. I am a huge fan of Angelina Jolie’s, but I must say to all parents out there…. do not copy her on this one.

Kids need to be wearing good quality sunwear with polycarbonate lenses that provide at least 99% UVA &UVB protection. Kids can be stylish, fashion forward, and trendy, and also be protected. Please protect your childrens’ sight, not just in the summer, but all year round!

American Eye- Q study

I was just reading excerpts from a consumer interactive Web-based survey, “The America Eye Q” which was created by the AOA ( American Optometric Association). One of the key findings was that “despite the fact that UV can cause damage to childrens’  eyes, 80%  of the respondents feel it is more important for adults to wear sunglasses than it is for children.” What is going on here? How much more information do parents need to understand that they need to take responsibility for their childrens’  eye health as well!

Survey Results IN!

I wanted to do a survey to see how many people understand the importance of “total protection” for their kids’ eyes, when purchasing sunwear.  We received tons of responses on our site,  and we were provided with wonderful information.

The results did show that more and more people are understanding  the importance of checking lense stickers as to what amounts of both UVA and UVB protection their kids sunwear provides. ( 96%)

Unfortunately, the results also showed that not as many people understand the importance of polycarbonate lenses for kids. Only 57% responded that they understand such importance, while the remaining 43% did not. We hope these numbers will improve in the future.

We plan on doing a “follow- up”  survey this winter to see how many understand the benefits of other lense types in their kids sunwear, especially in the winter months.

Schools finally taking notice of the importance of quality sunwear for kids.

Yeah! Schools are finally jumping on the bandwagon to help protect our childrens’ eyes from harmful UV rays. Just recently, students  at Arncliffe Public School became the first in the state to wear sunglasses as part of their compulsory uniform.

I am confident  that many other schools will follow. Many medical experts have praised the school’s “trailblazing” efforts, an idea which was originated from the Parents and Citizens committee.

This is a terrific example of what schools should be doing. It is only a matter of time, when all schools will implement programs such as these.

For information on how we can help implement a program such as this in your own childrens’ school, contact us at info@eyescreamshades.com
